Silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) is the ceramic you choose when a part needs to be strong, tough and light all at once. With a density of only 3.2 g/cm³, flexural strength of 700–900 MPa and fracture toughness of 6–8 MPa·m^1/2, it outperforms most metals on a specific-strength basis while surviving thermal shocks that would crack alumina or zirconia.

Those properties explain its dominance in hybrid bearing balls, turbocharger rotors, gas-turbine blades and automotive engine components. In the semiconductor industry it appears in wafer handling and lift pins where stiffness, low contamination and thermal cycling capability are simultaneously required.

PropertyIndicative Value
CompositionGas-pressure sintered silicon nitride
Density3.20-3.25 g/cm3
Vickers hardness1500-1600 HV
Flexural strength700-900 MPa
Fracture toughness6-8 MPa.m1/2

Potential Advantages

Best-in-class combination of strength, toughness and low density; exceptional thermal shock resistance; fine microstructure allows bearing-grade surface finish; resistant to molten non-ferrous metals (Al, Cu, Zn).

Design Considerations

Gas-pressure sintered GPSN gives the best properties but is the most expensive variant. Pressed/sintered SN can reduce cost for less demanding applications. Confirm whether the application involves molten iron or steel — Si₃N₄ reacts with them, so a protective coating or material switch is needed.

Limitations & Trade-offs

One of the more expensive engineering ceramics. Reacts with molten ferrous alloys, limiting use in steel-processing environments. Thermal conductivity (25–35 W/m·K) is lower than SiC, so it is not ideal as a heat-spreader.
