Hafnia (HfO₂) is a high-k, high-melting-point refractory ceramic used primarily in cutting-edge applications where its combination of thermal stability, neutron-absorption cross-section and large bandgap is irreplaceable.
It serves as a gate dielectric in advanced semiconductors (replacing SiO₂ at sub-45 nm nodes), as a refractory plasma-etch component, and in nuclear applications as a control-rod material and neutron absorber. Melting at ~2750 °C with excellent chemical stability, hafnia survives environments that melt or corrode most other ceramics.
