Silicon carbide (SiC) occupies a narrow band of material space where extreme hardness, high thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion coexist. No other engineering ceramic combines Vickers hardness of 2200–2500 HV with thermal conductivity of 120–200 W/m·K and an expansion coefficient of only 4.0×10^−6/K.
That profile makes SiC the default choice for mechanical seals exposed to abrasive slurries, burner nozzles running in combustion environments, and semiconductor wafer handling parts that see rapid temperature cycling. It is also the go-to material for armour tiles and blast-nozzle linings where erosion resistance is non-negotiable.
